What Types of Braces are there?

There are removable, fixed or functional braces. The amount of tooth movement that can be achieved with removable braces is limited, but they are often used in addition to fixed braces.

Fixed braces allow greater control of tooth movement and can be placed on the outside or inside (tongue side) of the teeth. These braces can be metal or tooth coloured (ceramic or plastic). The latest metal braces have what are known as self-ligating brackets e.g. the In-Ovation-R and Damon systems, which are thought to result in the teeth moving slightly faster making the treatment quicker.

Functional braces are removable braces used on growing children to improve their bite. Finally there are the clear retainer type braces called Invisalign.
